Turmeric is that beautiful golden spice, ground from a root, that turns curries yellow and stains your fingers and wooden spoons! It has become well known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, it is also said to help stabilize blood sugar levels. However, some confusion has arisen. Folks have heard that it is necessary to have pepper with their turmeric for it to be absorbed and used by the body adequately. But this is not so. The absorption of turmeric only becomes an issue if you are taking an isolated extract of turmeric like curcumin. Much of the research concerning turmeric’s absorbability is specific to extracted curcumin, which on its own has low bioavailability. So, take turmeric rather than the curcumin extract; use the spice in your cooking, warm it in your milk before bedtime to promote a good night sleep and know that you are helping to create a healthy body!
